Making a New Lawn from Seed

Sowing grass is the most inexpensive way to produce a lawn. You can choose a seed mix that best suits growing conditions and the use to which the lawn will be put. You can also sow wildflowers and clover at the same time to create a richer environment that will be more attractive to wildlife.

Sow in the wetter seasons of spring or autumn, although lawns can be sown in summer in wetter climates. When preparing the site, make sure the finished surface is firm and level. Complete soil preparations well before you intend to sow, to allow time to create a ‘stale seed bed’.

Leave the area bare for a few weeks, and weed seeds close to the soil surface will germinate. If the weather is dry during this period water to encourage weed germination. Hoe the weeds off just before sowing the new lawn, leaving a fine tilth on the surface. This removes many weeds seedlings that would otherwise compete with the grass seedlings.

How to Sow- To sow seed evenly it helps to divide up the area into square-yard(square-meter) plots with string or long canes. Measure out sufficient seed for a single plot, then divide in half. Sprinkle the first half evenly over the soil in one direction, then sow the 2nd batch perpendicular to this. Mixing the seed with sand can help you sow more evenly, as you can see where you have sown.

Gently rake the seed into the soil to cover it slightly to hide it from the birds. On small areas consider covering with netting to keep birds off until the seed has germinated. Always sow at the recommended rate given on the package. Sowing too thickly results in weak, congested grass growth. Sowing too thinly leaves gaps where weeds can take over.

Aftercare- Make sure soil is kept moist. If there is insufficient rains use a lawn- sprinkler. During warm weather the seed should germinate within 14-21 days. Any netting should be removed after germination. Continue to water young seedlings if weather is dry. Try to avoid walking over newly emerged grass until 1 in. (2.5cm) tall. Check over area and regularly pick out emerging weeds.

Once grass has grown 2-3in(6-7.5cm) tall you can give it a light trim with a mower. At this point it is good to roll the lawn with a roller.to firm the new grasses. Over the coming weeks slowly begin to increase cutting frequency. This encourages grass to develop new growth, eventually producing a thick, robust lawn.
