Black Vine Weevils
Adults black vine weevils are wingless, dull, dark black-brown about 1/4in (9mm) long, covered in small dull yellow specks. They emerge in May or June, feeding at night. Virtually all are female each laying several eggs in soil around the host plants from late July. They feed on plant roots until the following spring when they pupate in the soil. Most adults die at the end of the season but some do overwinter.
Susceptible plants- are almost any type found in the garden, house or greenhouse with plants in pots being particularly at risk.
Symptoms- Adult black vine weevils eat irregular holes around the edges of plants. This damage is more cosmetic than life threatening. Larvae are the main problems as they feed on the roots. If a plant wilts and dies check in and around the root ball for this pest. There may be no leaf symptoms.

Prevention and Control- Inspect plants regularly for adult weevils, particularly at night. Protect individual pots and greenhouse bench legs with sticky tape smeared with a non drying glue and maintain these barriers regularly.
Biological control- Outdoors and undercover you can use a Beneficial Nematodes - H. bacteriophora
at minimum soil temperatures that are above 54F(12C). It is best applied in May, June, August, and early September. Undercover it may be used year around as long as the soil temperatures are adequate. Survival of both eggs and larvae is greater if watering is reduced and if soils are allowed to dry out in July and August.
Providing for adequate drainage around plantings near homes should help somewhat. Some success has been achieved in protecting potted plants by using entomopathogenic nematodes which attack the black vine weevil larvae. Keeping the soil moist after nematode release is important to enhance their effect. are used,
