Corn Earworm

Adult corn earworms are tan moths that emerge in early spring migrating long distances to find food if necessary. Females lay white ribbed eggs and round eggs on leaves or in the tips of corn ears. Eggs hatch in 3 days.

Susceptible Plants- Corn and tomatoes are the main targets but corn earworm larvae will also feed on broad range of vegetable crop, fruit, and flowers

Life Cycle-
Corn earworms overwinter as pupae in underground cells. Some adults from these pupae begin to emerge as early as late March, others may not appear until August. There are generally four generations each year, however, overlap is great and adult moths that can lay eggs may be present in significant numbers throughout most of the growing season. Female moths search out green silks on which to lay single eggs.

Following hatch, the small corn earworm larvae often eat the egg shell before beginning to feed on the silk. Corn earworms generally complete their development in 14 to 16 days. Full grown worms leave the ear and pupate in the soil. The new adult will be active in another 10 to 14 days.

Prevention and Control- Plant corn cultivars with tight husks to prevent larvae from entering or open the husk ends and dig out any corn earworm larvae before the damage the main ear. Squirt mineral oil on the tips of the ears. Attract native parasitic wasps and native predators
.
Biological Control-
after corn silks start to dry  spray Bacillus thuringiensis var.kurstaki(B.T.K.) into the tips and ears where corn earworms are feeding. Squirt  Beneficial Nematodes - S. Feltiae into tops of corn ears. Release Green Lacewing  or Pirate Bugs: Orius insidiosis,. Caterpillar Parasites: Trichogramma species,  and or  Ladybug Beetles: Hippodamia convergens, can be used.

Pesticide Control-
Pyrethrin Garden Insect Spray If you need immediate insect control or knockdown, PyGanic® Crop Protection EC 1.4 II is the best pyrethrum (botanical pesticide derived from chrysanthemums) product available on the market today. Bonide Bt Thuricide  is nature's non-toxic defense against catrpillars.
