Fava Bean

Vicia faba

The fava bean is also known, as broad bean is a hardy, reliable crop that thrives in cool conditions. It can be sown in autumn (under shelter) or spring for mid summer harvest. Dwarf or shorter varieties can be grown in containers. Fava beans will fix nitrogen in the soil and is often grown as cover crops.

Cultural Diversity-
Dwarf and tall cultivars contain green, white (pale green), or red seeds. Green seeded plants are said to be tastier than white seeded plants. Long pod varieties tend to be harder than short pod cultivars. Most fava beans produce white flowers. Organic and heirloom varieties are available.

Ideal Site-
Fava beans need a sunny, open site; winter crops need shelter. This crop will not do well on dry or waterlogged soils. This crop is lime tolerant. Prior to planting; prepare the site by applying a low-fertility soil improver. The ideal soil pH is 6-7

Seed to Harvest-
Spring sown beans, 12-16 weeks; autumn sown crops: 28-35 weeks

Cultivation- The minimum germination temperature is 41F (5C). Undercover: In late autumn sow extra-hardy cultivars in a cold frame or hoop house. For early crops, sow in boxes or biodegradable tubes. Transplant the seedlings when there are 3 to 4 leaves. Rapid growth of young plants limits most diseases, also useful if mice tend to eat seeds.

Outside: In spring sow seeds from March-April. Fava bean plants stop growing wellat temperatures above 59F (15C)

Spacing- Fava beans are usually grown in double rows, 6-9in. (15-20cm) between plants, 24in (60cm) between rows. Block Planting: 8-12in (20-30cm)

Plant Care-
Pinch out the growing tips once the bottom flower clusters have opened to deter black bean aphids. Earlier sowings are usually less prone to attack. Tall varieties may need support of stakes and string when pods swell, especially in windy areas.

Problems- Mice, pea and bean weevil, broad bean chocolate spot, broad bean rust, root rot.,black bean aphids

Harvesting-
Harvest pods when beans can be just felt through them, before they get large and tough. Young pods may be eaten whole. Fava beans freeze well.

Nutrients- Broad beans are a good source of Dietary Fiber, Protein, Phosphorus, Copper and Manganese, and a very good source of Folate.

Fava Bean Seeds and other dry bean cultivars, including some heirloom and  organic varieties are available for home and commercial gardeners.
