Marjoram is similar to oregano, but preferred by many because it has a much sweeter taste and is a staple in French cooking.. Marjoram is a very close relative of oregano, and is a member of the Mint family. It is native to North Africa and Southwest Asia. It thrives in dry, arid regions, and it grows 2-4 ft. (60-120cm)

Marjoram can be grown indoors while still small. Place it in a sunny window. After your have enjoyed it all winter, plant it outdoors after all danger of frost. If you have limited space, try this herb in a container on your patio or deck.

Ideal Location-
Marjoram prefers full sun and a well drained soil. They will do well in average soils, and tolerate dry soil conditions. Being native to arid regions, Marjoram will withstand droughts very well.

Cultivation -
Marjoram are grown from seed. Get an early start on this popular herb by starting it indoors as a houseplant. Or, directly sow seeds into your garden in the spring after the last frost. Sow seeds early in the season and cover lightly with soil.

 
Space seedlings or thin plants to 12 in (30cm) apart, in rows 18 in. (45cm) apart. Do not add fertilizer to this plant, and it will produce stronger flavor. Pick flower bulbs as soon as they appear. The leaves turn bitter after flowers bloom. Whiteflies, spider mites, thrips can affect marjoram. This plant has minimal disease issues.

Harvesting - Harvest leaves at any time after the plant has produced a few dozen leaves. Pick the young, tender
leaves, as they are best for flavor. Pick them in the morning when the oils are strongest. Spread leaves out to dry in a cool and ventilated area. Leaves can also be put in the freezer for later use.
 
Culinary Uses - Marjoram used in cooking for soups, stews, vegetables, stuffing, salads, cheese, eggplant, and meats and is popular in French cooking.

Other Uses -
The essential oils of Marjoram are used in perfumery, being added to scent soaps and lotions. The flowers of both plants dry well and are a major constituent of potpourris and decorative arrangements.

Marjoram is used in herbal sleep pillows. It also makes a pleasantly fragrant bath herb. It makes effective home insect repellents and can used to disinfect beehives. Marjoram can be useful as a household cleaning solution added to ammonia, vinegar, or just water. .
