Moles

Adult Moles are about 6in (15cm) long, with dense, dark brown fur. Female a litter of four or so per year. They do not feed on plants, but their activities can undermine them, This damage is usually in the form of tunnels and/or mounds in lawn that can be unsightly, disturb root systems, and provide cover or travel lanes for other small mammals.

The common mole is an insectivore, not a rodent. Its diet is restricted to ground invertebrates such as grubs, millipedes, ants and the like. However, the mole's primary food source is earthworm, so trying to control white grub and lawn insects is no protection from mole activity. The activity in certain lawns can simply come and go throughout the season.

Symptoms-
Moles create mounds of loose soil ("mole hills") on cultivated lands, lawns, and rough ground. Light well-drained soils are most affected. Damage is generally the greatest in late winter and early spring.

Prevention and Control-
Trapping is the only certain way to control this pest. The best time to trap moles is in late winter and early spring and when runs are more easily located. First locate the permanent runs by careful observation, probing, and excavation

Place a mole trap in the run, chosing a straight run within 6-8in (15-20cm) of the soil surface, Examine the trap at least once a day. If it fails to catch a mole within four days, move it to another run. It may be possible to deter for a brief length of time by using repellents that create a strong smells or by using a Solar Powered Sonic Mole, Gopher & Rodent Deterrent to produce a vibration in a run.

Moles are sometimes considered beneficial to gardeners and farmers because they eat insects and grubs. However, they are a nuisance when they demolish lawns and turf grasses in homes and golf courses through their tunneling. They also destroy gardens by separating plant roots from the soil.
