Nectria Canker

Nectria canker is a fungal disease spread by wind and rain splash, This disease enters the plant through cracks in the bark, leaf scares, or pruning cuts. Diseased fruit on trees can also be a source of infection.

Susceptible Plants - Species of Nectria canker that cause cankers and dieback are common on a wide range of hosts, mostly hardwoods.  Necteria has been found on vine and bigleaf maple, horse chestnut, mimosa, red alder, hawthorn, poplar, and quince, Choisya, Pacific dogwood, hazelnut, Cotoneaster, fig, honey locust, apple, plum, cherry, pear, buckthorn, blackberry, willow, mountain ash, Spiraea, western hemlock, and elm.

Symptoms- The initial symptoms of infection generally appear in the spring with sudden wilting of leaves or the failure of leaves to appear. Sunken cankers are generally associated with wounds or at the bases of dying branches, and may girdle branches or small stems. Bark within cankers dies and appears dry and cracked.

The most prominent sign of infection is the presence of masses of orange-pink colored "coral-spots" for which the disease is named. Tree bark shrinks and cracks, often in concentric rings with the centered piece of bark falling away/ Deep lesions develop on branches.

Swelling can occur around the canker, and young twigs may die back. Cream colored pustules may be seen in summer, red spots are more common in autumn. Papery bark can result. Uncontrolled nectria canker can ring an entire stem. Fruit skins crack, some fruits dry and can remain ‘mummified’ on the tree.

Prevention and Control-
Do not grow trees prone to nectria canker  on wet sites or badly drained clay soil. Improve drainage where existing trees are established. If a young tree becomes infected with canker it  is advisable to remove it. Once a tree is established sow a grass seed mixture up to the main stem to reduce the risk of infection by rain splash. Cut out the cankers and diseased branches. Do not use poplar or hawthorn as a windbreak near apples since they are the primary hosts of nectria canker.
